INTRODUCTION The main object of writing this book, apart from my life story and medical history, is to help renal patients and their families understand the seriousness of adhering to a rigid diet and at the same time enjoying life to the full. I do know it is a bit of a bind, having to be treated on CAPD or Haemodialysis, but believe me; life is too precious to let dialysis deter you from enjoying a normal life. I ought to know, as I have first hand experience of this. In no time in my 40 years have I ever let this illness get the better of me. Every patient should think positively and say to themselves,"well if Brian can do it, so can I." Of course we all, at some point, feel despondent, especially when we have set-backs, but I'm afraid there are some things which we have to accept but must have the willpower to overcome and never ever think it is the end of the line. Personally, in my experience, you should keep a close check on your sodium (salt), fluid and also watch your potassium and phosphate intake. These are four dangers. If only you could restrict yourselves of these commodities, I don't see any reason why you should not live a long and reasonably healthy life. Always remember that there is somebody worse off than yourself. After all, where would we be if it were not for dialysis and the dedicated medical staff who care for us?There are thousands of people in the world who contract renal failure every year but only a small percentage are fortunate enough to go on to a dialysis programme. For further information on my book, details are on the next page, and of course, 25% of proceeds go to the renal charity (KPA)...Many Thanks. Regards,
